Vontimitta Sree Rama Temple

“Vontimitta” named after the two disciples of Lord Sree Rama, Vontudu and Mittudu is a mandal headquarter village, 28 km from Kadapa City. The village is established with a rural setting with a serene attribute blessed by the presence of Sree Rama temple.

Vontudu and Mittudu who were great devotees of Lord Sree Rama had constructed the temple. The temple has many unique attractions that can only be found here. The statues of Vontudu and Mittudu can be seen at the entrance of the temple. Legends say that after construction, they have sacrificed their lives to unite with lord Rama and henceforth became statues.

The temple at Vontimitta is the only place in India where the marriage ritual of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita is done at night. Besides this, the temple also is embellished with many distinctive qualities - beautiful architecture and carvings, ancient water springs and the idols installed by Jambavantha, a mythological character in the Vaanara army who helped Rama in the war in Ramayana.

Noticing the architectural significance of the place, architectural survey of India has granted a status of “Historical Monument” for the temple. The statues of Vontudu and Mittudu at the entrance, The inner sanctum of the temple which happens to be carved from a single rock, Beautiful state of the art carvings on the pillars of the temple along with the water springs called “Raama theertham’’ and “Laxmana theertham” asset the temple for its grandeur.

Vontimmitta TempleThis 450 year old temple has many legends about it. People believe that the springs have actually originated when Rama and Laxmana have shot their arrows direct into the heart of the earth. However, the credentiality of these stories are never scientifically proved. The next most important thing about this place is the Keerthanas chanted by Annamacharya, a devotee of Lord Tirumala Venkatesha. There is an idol of dancing Ganesha in the middle of the temple which is believed to have constructed to serve as a reminiscence of the actual dance performed by Lord Ganesha to the chantings of Annamacharya.

Lengends reveal many mysterious things, science may or may not unfold them but what really matters is the essence of the divinity of our ancestral culture and architecture at the place. So everybody who gets a chance must visit this place called Vontimitta to only replenish our senses but also experience our past and ultimately feel happy about who we are and who we were.

How to reach Vontimitta

There are public bus services provided from the APSRTC bus station at Kadapa. Besides buses, since the place only a half hour drive from Kadapa, you can always hire a taxi or rent a car. There is also a railway line connecting Kadapa and Vontimitta as the village falls on the Mumbai-Chennai railway line.
